primary emotions
In all our decisions, emotions are present. There can be no project if it is not generated by an emotion in the first place. All emotions in the human being are transitory. Emotions helped our ancestors to survive, so emotions got rooted in our brains and we cannot function without them now.
We behave and live basically by only a few primary emotions. Of all primary emotions, fear is the most powerful one. There is also disgust (which prevented our ancestors from eating rotten food), love (which created the links among the human group) and some more... Happiness is an emotion, too. As every emotion, happiness is a transitory state.
Our imagination, which is probably the only thing that distinguishes us from chimpanzees, sets emotional mechanisms in motion. Chimpanzees may get frightened if they see hunters coming up, but humans get frightened if we imagine hunters coming up, or if we think they might be coming up in the future... So imagination plays this double game of allowing us creativity and invention but constraining our capacity to be happy. We can content ourselves if we think we are safe. Happiness is best defined by the absence of fear. The carpe diem was never so much in vogue.
Let´s use it for ourselves, and not for marketing campaigns selling products wrapped in neverending-happiness fancy paper. Let´s not hope that one major aspect in our life, be it love, or our carreer will provide us with happiness forever. Don´t let them fool you, eternal happiness does not exist. Let´s have the time to be sad, too, as part of our human nature.
